North Macedonia

Two cities I explored, two routes that actually work, and the practical page. I wish someone had handed me that the first time.

What nobody tells you before you land

North Macedonia is small, cheap and still half-empty of tourists — a landlocked corner of the Balkans built around one wild, eccentric capital and one ancient lake. Almost everyone flies into Skopje, is baffled by its statues for an afternoon, and leaves without ever seeing Ohrid, which is the one mistake this page is built to save you from.

So the two routes below are built around the road that matters: the three hours between Skopje and Lake Ohrid. Give the capital its full, strange day, then let the lake slow you right down — that's the whole country in the right order.

Two routes that actually work

Three days is enough for Skopje's eccentric center. Six adds the whole road down to Lake Ohrid.

The eccentric center — the statue-filled square, the Old Bazaar, Kale fortress and Mother Teresa's birthplace, with a half-day trip to Matka canyon.

The one I'd take. Skopje first, then three hours south to Ohrid and its lake — with an easy add-on to Matka canyon or a day out to Bitola if you have the time.

Questions I get about North Macedonia

How many days do I need?+

Three is enough for Skopje and a half-day at Matka canyon. Six is the country done right — Skopje plus three unhurried days on Lake Ohrid, with room for a day out to Bitola.

Skopje or Ohrid?+

Both, in that order. Skopje is the strange, statue-heavy capital you land in; Ohrid is the ancient lake town you actually slow down for. If you only have a weekend, keep Skopje; if you have a week, the lake is the reason to come.

How do I get around?+

Skopje to Ohrid is about three hours by bus or car — buses are frequent and cheap. In the cities you walk everywhere; a rental car only pays off for Matka, Bitola and the villages around the lake.

When should I go?+

May to September is warm and dry. July and August fill Ohrid with festivals and beach crowds; June and September give you the same lake with fewer people and cheaper rooms.
