The old town of Ljubljana below its hilltop castle, Slovenia

Slovenia

Two cities I explored, two routes that actually work, and the practical page. I wish someone had handed me that the first time.

What nobody tells you before you land

Slovenia is tiny, green, and safe — you can cross it in a morning, from the Alps to the Adriatic. Most people give it two rushed days on the way somewhere else, and that is exactly the mistake this page is built to save you from: the country rewards slowing down.

So the two routes below are built around short distances, not a checklist. Base yourself in Ljubljana, take the day up to Lake Bled slowly, and if you have the week, let the country open out — a gorge, a second lake, the little Venetian town on the coast.

Questions I get about Slovenia

How many days do I need?+

Three is enough for Ljubljana and Lake Bled without rushing. Five lets the country open out — Lake Bohinj and Vintgar Gorge, and down to Piran on the coast. It's a small country; the distances are short.

Ljubljana or Lake Bled?+

Both, and they pair perfectly. Base yourself in Ljubljana for the old town and nightlife, and give Bled a full day — arrive early or stay late to have the lake before the day-trippers.

Do I need a car, or is the bus fine?+

Buses connect Ljubljana, Bled and Piran cheaply and often, so the bus is fine for the essentials. A car pays off only if you want the lakes and gorges at your own pace — and Ljubljana's centre is car-free anyway.

When should I go?+

Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are the sweet spot: mild, green and far fewer crowds than the summer peak. Summer is warmest and best for the lakes, but Bled gets busy.
